What are EMFs?
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are a combination of electric and magnetic fields. Maxwell’s equations describe how charges and currents interact with such fields. Specifically, they describe how electric fields converge or diverge toward or away from electric charges, how magnetic fields curl around electrical currents, and how the two fields influence one another when they vary in time. When EMFs propagate from place to place, they are referred to as electromagnetic waves.
Low-Frequency vs RF Fields
EMFs are often divided into two categories: low-frequency and RF. This refers to whether the target is in the near or far field of the EM source. Fields behave very differently when in the near or far fields, and thus require very different protections. This is most apparent when trying to reduce exposure to EMFs from high-voltage power lines versus cell phone or wifi emissions.
Are they truly harmful?
The health effects of EMFs have been a source of debate for decades. One study showed a link to childhood cancer, and others have demonstrated links to various less-serious maladies. My belief is that some people are more susceptible to EMFs than others, so for many, it warrants at least some level of consideration.
